Well, techincally the first had a fair amount of steampunk in it.

Steam. Powered. Jet-Ski's.
Also, a giant Steam Powered drill.

Yeah.

Anyway, this looks awesome. YOu know what kinda sucks, though? That means that Aang is dead since the Avatar just continually reincarnates. I wonder what Adult Aang will look like (In the inevitable "meet the past incarnation" mentoring-scenes).

Also, I wonder if they'll tell us more about Aang's life through stories and such told to Korra, since it was implied that he was pretty much one of the strongest Avatar's ever (what with the Spirit Bending, the earth-vibration sight that will eventually lead to Metal-Bending, etc), if not the strongest (excluding the first one).

didn't she die?
No towards the end Zuko's dad told him he exiled her and at the last moment of the last episode Zuko went up to him and said "Where's my mom?" and it ended with no conclusion of his mom :(
sorry forgot

but i think that would be a completely different thing since this is set 2 or so generations apart it would be kinda confusing for the story line

I'm not sure how many people know this, but avatar was originally supposed to have a steam-punk setting that was scraped at the last minute. it's meationed on the "what could have been" page on tvtropes.

my only question is are there going to be guns or are they going to wimp out on that tech.
o_O The original Avatar series ended with an attempted carpet bombing of the world. I'm sure they won't wimp out on anything.
i remember but the fire nation was in the second industrial revolution so wheres gunpowder did they just not make it or is censorship the thing.
What purpose would gun powder serve if you can just shoot fire from your hands? However, in the original series there is one of the Rough Rhinos who uses dynamite.
Plus Sokka had those bags of not-gunpowder that he tried to use to imitate firebending... that one time.. I can't remember where or he did but I'm sure he did do that so ya, gunpowder exists kinda.

OT: I hope that they find a way to bring in a lot of cameos without resorting to blatant fanservice or a bunch of nudge-nudge wink-wink moments.
well if the story happens then i think the non benders would use them.

I was scared to death that they'd rehash the old war plot... but between this and Portal 2? I have high expectations for 2011, all we need is the announcement of a good book.

ETA: Also, who else thinks Korra might be related to Sokka and Suki?

I heard the cartoon was good, but didn't care to much when I did watch it. I heard from my good friend that the movie was pretty much just all the characters flaring their nostrils for a couple hours.

Wow a reason to actually go onto nickelodeon again? Can't wait. I loved the original avatar. I'm a bit sad to see it 70 years after the original, which also means Aang lived into his early 60's? Me thinks much like Roku he died from something other than natural death or disease. Also chances are all the other characters are dead although I'm sure one or two of them will still be alive. Hope it is as good as the original if not better.

Just remember, this isn't an apology for the movie. It was in the works since the series itself actually ended. Nickelodeon's still got some 'splainin' to do.
I'm sure that this was in development for a good time, but I can't help but think that this series being announced AFTER the movie might be a deliberate choice on the part of Nickelodeon.

I could have sworn I heard millions of DeviantART artists simultaneously clicking their pens to prepare to draw erotic pictures of Korra...

Steampunk?
I go get my goggles and top hat.

EDIT: That girl must be skilled as hell to master 3 styles...while the avatar is still alive.
They never said Aang is alive. In fact he pretty much has to be dead for her to be the next avatar. A son of Aang is apparently in this show.
..WUT.

Oh that is cruel, man. "Hey you know that guy, you cared so much about? He died! :D."

I feel like a sad bear now.
Ill cheer you up.

Imagine the people trying to figure out who Aang had his kid with, and how many -ships will man their guns harpoons.
...

That was NOT helpful.

It already bad enough they were RIGHT about the next avatar being in the water tribe.
Er, the Avatar always goes through a cycle when it comes to learning their bending and their reincarnations.

Air --> Water --> Earth --> Fire --> Air etc.

Remember in the finale when Aang spoke to his past incarnations? With that, we can put the avatars back in chronological order. Chuyang (Forgive the spelling), the female air bender; Koruk, the male water bender; Kiyoshi, the female earth bender; Roku, the male fire bender; then Aang, the male air bender.

Moving on to a female water bender also points out the male-female pattern, which seems to go "The avatar is always reincarnated as the opposite gender as a small cycle progresses, until you reach Air, then their gender will be the same as the fire bender before them." So from this I'm going to wager that before Chuyang, the prior Avatar was female.

And I'm done nerding out, here's hoping that this series lives up to its predecessor.
