A Fedora looks good if you're wearing a suit, a waistcoat, or, at the very least, a shirt and tie.

A Fedora does not look good if you're wearing shorts and a "my little pony" t-shirt that's several sizes too small for you.

I only think it looks good on men or women over forty that wear suits. Basically the look you see in old movies. I really don't think it looks good on anyone else. I think some people wear it now because they think it adds "class". Then there are some people who just like wearing them and don't care about public opinion.
First reply, nail on the head. Thank you. I was thinking of writing down a list of people who absolutely shouldn't wear one, but this is much more elegant. Also, now I want to watch The Sting again. :)

Unless you're going to get yourself properly dressed to wear the thing, then it just looks stupid. It'd be like wearing a waistcoat with shorts and sandals.

I really don't care about fashion, but just randomly wearing a fedora with a t-shirt and jeans makes you look like you don't know how to dress yourself.

Like with any other article of clothing, it has to "fit" the wearer- not just in size, but in style. The problem is that some people assume that a particular article of clothing automatically connotes style just by being worn. A trilby with a ratty T-shirt and jeans is like a silk tie with an $8 Walmart shirt and bed-hair.

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to get back to making "newsie" caps a thing again.

This threads funny cause it really shows the kind of person that frequents this site.

Fedoras look fine with suits and some smart clothes, some people can even make them look pretty sharp.

However you're kidding yourself if you think you look good in a fedora, t-shirt and cargo shorts combo. You just confirm what people were already judging you for.
Fedoras were cool. They were. Now a certain breed of people have started wearing them with casual clothes, and they have made it one of the most cringe worthy looks on the planet, the fedora, t-shirt and cargo shorts look.

I think it's a decent-looking hat. While I might not wear one myself, that's largely because I tend to disregard hats in general. All the stuff about it being a thing for maladjusted misogynists or whatever is is just another bit of silly internet BS with little bearing on reality.

Fedoras are great hats, I just think people have gotten tired of others using them as a badge of instant and undeniable coolness. They're just way too overplayed as status symbols.

And I think hats in general are just a bit silly. Unless you're wearing it for practical reasons or you're just really self conscious about losing your hair, it's like wearing sunglasses when the sun isn't even out.

Absolutely yes, I find the Fedora/Trilby, when worn appropriately, to be a very attractive piece of headwear. It's something you need to work at to make look right, you can't just throw one on and suddenly you're Frank Sinatra or somebody, it's something that has to be carefully considered, or else you'll just look like a massive tool.

I don't understand the fascination...
It's just a hat, and not a particularly strange one either.

I used to love trilbies and fedoras, but as most of the feminists I know and/or follow on twitter are constantly mocking men who wear them as self-ascribed Nice Guys[footnote]You know the type, yeah? "Why won't she shag me? I'm a nice guy! I opened doors for her and stuff. That guy she is shagging is a total bastard[citation needed]! She totally friendzoned me."[/footnote], that now whenever I see someone wearing one I automatically think "douchebag" =( Seriously, if anyone calls me "M'lady" I might scream. Possibly with laughter.

As part of a coordinated outfit, I imagine a fedora or trilby could look very dapper. Unfortunately, they're too often matched with print T-shirts, trenchcoats and shorts, and as a result look like a very half-assed way of indicating the wearer's class and sophistication. It's a bit like somebody walking around wearing a mortar board to subtly advertise how intelligent they are, or wearing transfer tattoos to try to look tough: you'd best be doing it for a joke, or else the joke is on you.

I say only a certain people can pulled it off wearing a fedora (like Yatzee). So yeah anyone else wearing it, I see that person as the sterotypical hipster and what nots.

Yep, that's the image that immediatly comes to my mind when someone says 'fedora' (or 'Actually, that's a trilby.'). Which is a shame, because a good hat on the right head on a body wearing the right outfit is still nice to see.

I kinda wish hats in general would become a thing again. Hats are nice. But, and that's a big but, they need to be part of a look and not just some random element added to a bunch of other random elements. I don't care that trilby and the videogame shirt with the somewhat clever wordplay both stand for a different part of you, you should not wear them together! D:

They can look classy when paired with a nice suit and a clean shave, otherwise I'd say people should avoid them or else it usually just comes across as a bit sloppy to be wearing one.
Unless you're Indiana Jones, obviously.

My initial instinct was that only women look good in fedoras. But Google was unwilling to give me evidence of this, though I know I've seen it in person.

Then I realized that they can look good if paired with a suit instead of a T-shirt.

Then I remembered art of Korra et. al rocking them. (But they also needed suits)

I think it looks good, but it's been ruined by all the poser/neckbeard/fagbags that wear it just because it's the thing to do now.

If I were to wear a hat, I'd choose a different old style.

It's part of Tex Murphy's signature attire. Why not wear it if you've got a suitable outfit to go with it?

Since when were the terms feminist, gamer, SJW, or atheist ever associated with fedoras? I always thought that it was pretty much almost exclusively used in conjunction with neckbearded self-proclaimed "nice guys".
I'm guessing because many stereotypical fedora-wearers are considered pushovers that will agree with pretty much anything if it means they are more likely to be considered cool or get laid.

Fedoras don't have much to do with atheists, rather the outspoken kind that goes out of their way to troll religious people. If someone goes into a library just to move bibles into the fiction section... chances are he wears a fedora.

I wouldn't be surprised if many SJW/white knights wear fedoras, as the stereotype does include the whole "real gentleman" thing (which the stereotypical fedora wearer interprets to mean "put women on a pedestal and treat them like children" which is pretty much the definition of "white knight"/"SJW" behaviour, though those behaviours are also based on stereotypes).

TL;DR: It's all stereotypes, man.

Anything shorter than shoulder length. It's similar because it requires a bold and interesting personality to make work.

"Oh wow look, you're wearing a fedora. You must be so much different from other guys"

"Oh wow look, you cut your hair short. You're definitely not like the other girls"

Is the default reaction to people wearing a look that they adopted simply to stand out and cry their special snowflake status to the world. To make it work you need to make the unusualness of your look seem like the natural extension of a standout person, and to do that you need to be exceptional.
Easy, tiger. That's like saying long-haired guys "only do it to stand out". Women have been cutting their hair short for decades since forever. In fact the people I know with the longest hair are typically male.

The only requirements for short hair is a pair of scissors, really. None of this "bold and interesting personality" nonsense. I'd actually argue that having long hair is more difficult to pull off, as long hair requires significantly more maintenance.

It's a nice hat if you wear it with the right outfit. don't rely need a suit to pull it off ether, just not a tshirt and jeans.. But the neck beards corrupted it. It has such bad connotations that I can't wear my fadora. Damn you neckbeards, Damn you to hell
