I've seen some unfair moderating on this site, most notably the part where users were perma banned for admitting and telling a user to use adblock in order for his computer not to lag whilst browsing the site. At the time, apparently, the rule was not made clear. The mods, however, ended up unbanning the members and making the rule more obvious.

I've been at this site for quite a while now, and from what I've seen, they seem pretty cool here, in fact the only time I even see them at all is if someone's being a complete tool.

They are harsh sometimes, particularly by the standards of the internet. However, that makes sure that this site doesn't become like the rest of the internet and remains quite civil.

I like our mods.

I haven't noticed them being unfair. Every time I've seen someone get mod wrath, it's been deserved.
Just writing first or such. They ban people on Yahtzee's page for no reason at all. read the latest and see why the first four people were banned. Absolutely no reason. I condone anything that suppresses freedom of speech.
They got banned for posting useless crap before the video had been up for 3 seconds. Not adding to discussion, low content posts, general idiocy. All seem like fine reasons.

They aren't unfair. They probably make mistakes occasionally, like anyone would, but they aren't unfair. This place would be terrible if we didn't have mods, every second post would be something like
Poll: PC OR XBORKX: WHICH IZ BETTAR, or
MY CAKE CAN HAS LIEZBURGER?
No, no, we need our mods.

Maybe. Most of them are pretty reasonable.

Still, I think they all have "selective look-away syndrome". It's where one guy gets in trouble for something, but another guy who does the same thing gets off of the hook.
^this, although they are the best mods i've ever seen. they can't be everywhere.

The trouble with deciding if they're "fair" or not has to do with understanding by whose standards of fairness you're going by. Forum moderators tend to strike their own balance based on the perceived needs of their audience and the tolerance for putting up with folk who test their boundaries on forums. Consequently, while I may not agree with some of their actions (such as my own probations/suspensions largely revolved around losing my temper with people who provoked me with irrational stubbornness) the bottom line is I can't really hold up a criteria and say that anything they do is "unfair." When it's your forum, and you're paying for the bandwidth, you make the rules.

It depends what forums you're on. I think the mods here do a good job. For me they're like ninjas. You don't see them until the strike.

These mods around here are excellent. They from time to time make mistakes, or just simply overstep their authority, but they are human beings behind that power, and are usually very good about it.

I know that it isn't easy looking over these threads sometimes, so I know they are doing the best they can with what wits they have. I'm also very happy with the poll you have.

Mods, if you check this out, thanks for doing a good job, and understanding how your users do things. Keep up the awesome work.

Nah. Escapist mods are pretty good. They ban people for being assholes and let you voice your opinions pretty freely. That said, I like to think of Escapists as the epitome of internet community. We're all pretty intelligent, we all know have a good understanding of what should and shouldn't be said, a lot enjoy the fedora in all it's glory.

Other sites are also pretty good. Their mods are good enough but they often have the mods that let just ban you for no reason. They're the guys who get all anxious when you mention a different race. You know, the ones that are sat there thinking "shit am I a racist now? Oh god, what if people find out? Oh god, what if I can't think of a third thing?!". There's also the ones who see themselves as a better class of member as you. The ones who don't get involved and take genuine offence if you disagree and threaten to ban you.

Either way, I hate mods who don't know what they're doing. Mods who know what they're doing and take an active part in the community? Oh, I love those guys.

First of all, you can stop saying we're afraid of the big bad moderators like they're going to shank my daughter or something if I disagree with them, because that's just silly.

Secondly, there have been unfair things that happen on this forum. Having been someone that was suspended herself I can say its somewhat incredulous that I can have heated arguments about FF with rabid fanboys that basically foam putrescent attacks on my intelligence but the moment I say something about facebook I was suspended certainly seems to be a rather inconsistent thing at best, but at the same time I never reported these people nor did I really feel the need to, I like to think Im more adult than that.

That out of my system, it -is- much better here than just about any other forum I have been to. The rules are clear and mostly consistently enforced and they're not made up on the spot to support some sort of forum dictatorship. I think people get far too upset and indignant about that kind of thing. These people don't have to provide a forum any more than I have to spend my time posting here, so acting as if a forum has to be moderated in some certain way is kind of unrealistic, and fairly pretentious I think.

So I guess the thrust of the thing to me is - could it be better? Certainly. There's always things that can be handled better and ways it can improve. But it also could be a lot worse, and as someone that frequents a lot of fora, I can say that this one is well above the median as far as quality of both membership and moderation goes.

[postscript:]

Also, Im not a moderator here myself, but this kind of thread would be locked by myself on a forum that I moderate. It's just causing needless tension, conflict, and negativity for the sake of getting a point across, and disrupting a forum to get a point across seems an awful lot like trolling.

In light of that second thought I guess I shouldn't've posted, but eh well.

You want to see bad mods go to ign.com where for every legit post (this including troll posts, at least they're still trolling on topic...=/) theres 10 spammers trying to sell Nike shoes or WoW gold....-_-

I haven't seen much unfairness first-hand, but i hardly trust them anyway. I'll go with "maybe", and it might eventually slide to "yes".

Since I assume we're talking about this site... I've never really seen the mods on the Escapist get over/under zealous, but that could just be because I'm not around all that much. On OTHER sites though, there's some massively biased/unfair mods I've seen. In comparison, I think the Escapist mods are pretty fair.

Heh, as far as liberty/free speech goes: generally the ones that complain about being trodden upon the most are the ones that are being dicks about it.

In fact, that could be said of people complaining about forum moderation, as well, though there are legitimate complaints as well. But if someone has a problem with forum moderation it would seem the respectful/gentlemanly/whatever thing to do to ... you know, talk to them about it, instead of climbing onto a soapbox. The psych minor in me just sees that as someone looking for validation in their indignation.

Forum moderators are good, when appropriate. For instance, take a look at 4chan's random page. There is *VERY LITTLE* forum moderation there, and the rules are only what is within lawful. I believe that any forum, given time and growth, with no forum moderation will deteriorate into that.
