Am I the only one who noted that there's only 27 or so black kids in the school? Seems a bit off balance, really.

On subject: "Wigger Day" was a terri-bad idea. Is it worth $75,000? Fuck, no. She was so depressed she ALMOST dropped out. What damage was done if she didn't? Gotta love that we live in a country where feeling bad can be worth money...

This is stupid. Actually it's retarded. But suing them is even more retarded. He's offended. So what? I'm sure he'll survive. People need to stop being so sensitive. Why should anyone give a fuck about offending someone? Whatever you do, someone, somewhere will be offended. Just stop the madness already. Fuck! Let retards have their wigger day. You can laugh at them later. If anything, it's offensive to actual wiggers.

Well, using the term "wigger" for one. A friend of mine explained it to me a while back. Apparently wigger is a white guy "acting" black (it's really a white guy acting like a street thug/gangster/gangbanger but whatever. That's how it's known).
_My man said to me, "That shit is racist to black people. A 'white guy acting black'. Think about it. First it implies all black people act like ignorant thugs. Secondly you're calling all black people 'niggers'. Wigger: white guy acting like a- You get it?"

So, yeah, it's racist twice over. Guess you'd call that double racist.

And it's hilariously retarded for a school to have that. Seriously. No one in Human Resources or anything even batted an eye at the idea?

My school had a pretty racist homecoming spirit days. We had a "bling-bling" day which basically meant dress like you're starring in a rap video. It was probably the least offensive way they could put it, but my sister who now goes to that school says they are no longer doing days like that so, there you go. I can't believe a school would use the word "wigger" officially. I don't think they meant anything by it, but jesus, the person who made the call on that is a massive idiot. Of course, mind you, I'm from the South and they're in Minnesota. Race is still a very sensitive issue here whereas it's probably not as big a deal there. Here, that would have never been cleared.

In some ways, I can understand the idea behind it. "Bling-bling" day was fun, even if it could be interpreted as offensive. I would support a school using a "Dress like a Rapper" day for spirit week, but the word wigger is so patently offensive...

Bad idea and whoever thought of it is a fool. The reason this is idiotic is because is not because its racist, I'm not sure there is any racial hatred behind it at all. The problem is its drawing attention to race and pointing out and emphasizing the a divide between blacks and whites. The world can only be properly equal in the sense of race when we stop drawing attention to the different races and start treating everyone the same.

We all share the trait that we are human, I think that's enough.

I'm sure that in some mind the whole let's-get-people-closer thing might've sounded like a good idea, but I still rather suggest making it purple, and not black.

This was just asking for a lawsuit.

A lawsuit that is, frankly, rather ridiculous, but I'm not one to criticise anyone who sees her chance to cash in. It's pretty good business sense right there.
It's called being a vulture. An official complaint maybe, but to sue the school? That's bloody ridiculous! This whole 'sue everybody' culture is just sick.

There needs to be a word for the comedy I see when other white people are accidentally racist. It's hilarious.

hmm, I'm curious. what's number one?

on topic, it's blown way over board, the school district will probably quit the day after the court case collapses. That's if they're smart, but having the day in the first place proves they're not

If a bunch of white kids want to dress up in baggy close and speak with "gangster" slang then it isn't racist. It's sort of like saying Eminem is racist because he's a white rapper with a "gangsta" style.

Edit: There wasn't really enough information within the news article to make a fair assessment.

I love how this what Fox News cares about displaying for the public's consumption of asinine issues no one would care about. Why not do a big story on how the US politicians are screwing things up for the worse? Sorry, my mistake, that is old news.

Anyway back to the actual story I merely respond with this, freedom of speech/expression should not be abridged just because one person had enough of a grievance to sue. Is it offensive? Sure, but I counter with three points:

1. Stereotypes are not reality, just common conceptions forced on us by the government, religious, and educational authorities

2. "Today a young man on acid realized that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, that we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves. Here's Tom with the weather."

? Bill Hicks

3. I now direct you to Yahtzee's take on race:

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/616-50-Cent-Blood-on-the-Sand

Civility and decency do not equal political correctness. Rebuttal?

I'll tell you guys why it's offensive.

"Wiggers" (from "white" and "******" mashed together) are white trash pretending to be "niggers" by being all gangsta and getting into rap and drugs and everything else that's considered "street". Universally a negative influence on teenagers and only makes black people look all the worse. Therefore it's racist. Seriously, go read YouTube comments on "gangsta" videos, I guarantee you'll see at least ONE user thinking he's cool being a wigger, because this racist trend is obnoxiously popular.
Yes, the trend is obnoxious and getting popular, however the "gangsta" style or culture isn't really any worse than say pirates (the Blackbeard kind of pirates). People like to think pirates are cool because of the freedom, adventure, opposition to authority, and various pleasures they indulge in. The same goes for "gangstas", both modern and 1930s Al Capone type gangsters.

I agree that the term "Wigger" is racist and should not have been used however I believe it is silly to look at the celebration as a purely racist one. The celebration is directly toward the lifestyle more than it is toward being racist. If it was expressively racist, then the kids would probably paint themselves black and start using racial slurs. The article did not mention these so I would have to assume the high school kids are just trying to have misguided, stupid fun.

Until reading this article, I never understood why race was still such an issue in the States. Now I do.
Fox News said:
A black student is suing her former Minnesota high school for celebrating "Wednesday Wigger Day," where white students pretended to be black during homecoming week, The Minneapolis Star Tribune reported Wednesday.
Good old Fox News, where even the wording of the article is such that the racial boundaries are hightlighted to their extremes. You almost have to admire their persistance, the poor buggers, in trying to reinforce attitudes that were dying out half a century ago.
Wait what? How did Fox cover that wrong/skewed?

the first problem is your link is to Fauwks 'News' (using news very lightly). Fauwks has made up stories to make minorities look weak and easily offended before, and often make it so the poor white man is being abused by the minorities. So until someone can provide a newspaper headline that isn't owned by Rupert Murdoch, i won't believe the story.

however, the article was kind enough to say what newspaper did write an article first. here is a link to it: http://www.startribune.com/local/126739938.html

Now, when you google "The Minneapolis Star Tribune wigger day" the first link is to Fauwks, the second to that link, and the third here, to this very thread. And i don't know about you other Americans from public schools, but typically homecoming takes place in late September to mid October, depending on the schedule of the football games. WHY then was this only NOW covered by the news? something like this in Ohio would get news for the notice that wiggers even exist. a student SUING a school? that would probably be a decision made far before an entire year had passed.

The whole article seems fishy at best to me.
Would it help your paranoia if I gave you a link to the Huffington Post [http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/08/03/wigger-day-red-wing-minnesota_n_916323.html] as well? As for why it took so long to get covered it's because the suit was just recently filed.

OT: I can't believe that someone would ever actually approve of this. It's just stupid
I can see it being offensive, but I could not care less. I think people should take issue with what Fox News cares about covering. This particular story was not skewed in any way from what I can tell. It is just sad that this is what Fox wants to focus on, and by extension this is what the audience wants.

Hey, the Foxnews link didn't seem that biased towards either side. It seems almost as if they were just reporting the event...

...weird...

Would the British equivalent be something like Chav 'Chues'day?

Oh lovely, Fox News gets to break this to us.

well, anyways, I dont know whats funnier. That Wiggers get an actual day, or that she wants 75K after she graduated for something that happend two years ago. isnt this a bit past the limit of when you can take action for this sorta thing?

... Wait a minute, can I sue people for being a bracker (for those not in the know, thats a black cracker). Cause those Oreos have just been making me feel offended everday, listening to country music and speaking properly and stuff. kidding, just kidding.

but for all seriousness, i want to shake the hand of the person that authorized this as an actual day. then I want to tattoo DUMBASS straight across their forehead in glow in the dark ink so EVERYONE can see at all hours of the day and night.

In the school district beside the one I went to, they had about.... 3800 or so in all 13 (K-12) grades, and only about five black families, so it was like 17 black kids (in all the grades total).

Though to be fair, I tihnk all the black kids were in my school distract, cause there was about 4200 in all the grades combined and something like 32% of our school was Black, another 12% were Oriental, 39% were white, and the rest were the mix of everyone else (pacific islanders, eastern bloc, south asian, etc).

its actually really common to see schools in suburban areas like this to have a wildly skewed race population in the schools.

Perhaps you can convince the aggrieved party to do that with the money she has and the judge to mandate that the tattoo by court order to the people behind it.
