I choose Chamander because Charizard is FRICKIN' AWESOME! *Ahem*
Charizard is a failure in every respect.

Blastoise FTW, though Empoleon is the best final evolution in the series.

I'm going to quote the Smogon Gen 1 analysis for Blastoise for you.

"He would be an above average Pokemon if it weren't for his movepool. While Blastoise is definitely the weakest of the starters, it can still do very well in UU play."
Smogon analyses aren't great for in-game use, as they're specialised for specific purposes. In-game, you typically want an entire team of sweepers. Blastoise was fine for that.

R/B: Bulbasaur
G/S/C: Cyndaquil
R/S/E: Treecko
D/P/P: Chimchar
B/W: Snivy

I picked all of them purely on aesthetics. Cyndaquil/Quilava/Typhlosion and Snivy/Servine/Serperior are my two all-time favourite choices.

Blue - Squirtle it's final move set as Level 52 Blastoise was Ice Beam, Surf, Bubblebeam, and Hydropump. The Ice Beam obviously reserved for your rival's Venasaur to and beat the crap out of lance before hand.

Silver/Crystal - Cyndaquil with the Sprout Tower at the beginning the Bug Gym and Steel Gym along with the Ice Gym it just made sense.

Sapphire - It was interesting because I played through it with all three and I honestly cannot choose which one. It was the best. Any one you picked you automatically won the game. Between Pursuite and Fury Cutter you could cut down Psychic annoyances, Ember and Double Kick and later replaced both with Flame Kick was just pure awesome, and then Water Gun and Mud Slap made for some fun combat. I ended up playing all three but I'll admit I started off with Torchic.

Diamond - Piplup. I thought hey rock type first I got a Water Type sweet. Then Grass Type was next so I'd just grab a flying type. Then there was fighting type and I was all like Oh heck yet Piplup...2 days later I have never hated a Pokemon like this. I've been confused, sleep, frozen, burned, poisoned, and paralyzed 50% more times than any other version it gets to the point where it's rediculus.

Squirtle worked best for the first gym, so I stuck with it for the most playthroughs.
In fact, I stick with the water-type starters for about half of my Pokemon playthroughs: Totodile because alligators/crocodiles are awesome, Mudkip because ground-types are strong, and Piplup because steel-types are resistive.

My first time playing Pokemon Red I chose Squirtle. In fact, I think next to my Raichu, Squirtle was the only pokemon I used(didn't exactly catch onto the whole build a team of pokemon thing). After becoming a Blastoise, I managed to get to your rival in the elite four, before I ran out of PP for every move(besides the potions/max revives, I didn't exactly know how to use items either, lol). Still remember the moveset of Mega Punch, Bubblebeam, Ice Beam, and Fissure/Bite even to this day.

The second time, I tried to do things differently. I chose Bulbasaur(becoming Venusaur), Raichu, and a Pidgeot. This was also the time I actually tried to catch pokemon, so I managed to catch both Articuno and Moltres. Needless to say, the Elite four became a lot easier once I actually learned how to play.

However, after pokemon Silver, I started choosing Fire Types as my starters(except for Gold[which I got first], I picked Chikorita in that one!).

I'm pretty sure I chose Charmander on my first playthrough because he looked the coolest, of course that was over ten years ago so my memory is a bit fuzzy.

as for the others I think it was

Totodile
Torchic
Empoleon
Snivy

I choose Squirtle because it was so cute and plus I liked water type Pokemon the best out of the three.

Definatly Charmander. I would never choose Bulbasaur because it would get demolished. Sure its better later in the game but the standard attack's suck. Plus I would always imagine it getting completly owned by a fire type. Somehow Bulbasaur dying in flames was a lot less appealing than my charmander getting doused in water by misty. Although we can all agree that pokemon yellow starting with Pikachu is beast even when it goes against Brock. Fastest. Gym Battle. Ever.

In Kanto I picked Charmander, I love the idea of owning my own pet dragon that could kill EVERYTHING.

In Johto, I picked Totodile for the same reason, I want my own lizard of epic death.

In Hoenn, I picked Torchic because the lizard option was a plant and lets face it, it sucks to start with plant type.

In Sinnoh, I picked Piplup because it's evolved form is badass and sounds like emperor, I named him Palpatine.

And FINALLY in Unova, I chose Tepig because he evolves into goddamned Gannondorf out of Windwaker.

....looking back I think I have an unhealthy attachment to the elements of fire and ice.

Squirtle. My sister chose Charmander so I guess I was her Blue. Ironically, I had Red Version. Also ironic that I also lost to her all the time (though that was because of Missigno and Rare Candies...)

I picked all three of them in Gen 1, but I really loved Squirtle. He was just so damn powerful compared to the other two.

I picked Bulbasaur. There were plenty of neat water types, and Fire wasn't good against the first 2 gyms.

Squirtle every time. As for the other gens though:

Gen 1: Squirtle
Gen 2: Totodile
Gen 3: Torchic

What's weird is that between me, my sister, and my friend, we cover each starter in each generation (or at least the first 3). We just happened to have different favorites each gen.

Started with Yellow, but I always take the Grass starter. I also always side with the Red game between the game pairs... Except for FireRed, because LeafGreen had Venu-fruggin'-saur on it! Guess I'm kinda Wally-esque about my greenery (Emerald was the second PKMN game I beat, after all, not counting TCG).
