Something I am not too horrible with: A knife. I love me some knives.
If I had a choice of something to be an expert with: a kilij, for both slicing power and the fact that it looks badass.

Something from the polearm line, preferably a Glaive, Partisan, Fauchard, or Corseque.

Or perhaps something I can dual-wield. Perhaps Xiphos/Makhaira, Spatha, Katzbalger, Any kind of Dao Sword, etc. I know some of them may not be preferable to dual wield, but as long as they're one-handed, or a "light" two-handed, I'd try to learn how to dual wield them effectively.

I also don't see what's so amazing about a lightsaber. Sure it's powerful, but all it is is a glowing stick. It technically has no blade, no defining edge, it's a glorified futuristic, multi-colored club that can tear through people.

My first choice would be a staff. Not a magic one or anything, just a regular shoulder height wooden pole made of any dense flexible wood.

Second would be a shield...yes a shield is a well...shield, but there is a reason some had spikes. As well as the fact that it's likely to hurt if you just bring the edge across your enemy's face.

Neither of the two make too much of a mess and it's slightly harder to injure yourself with them.

I favor a longsword. I can 2 hand it for extra power and when half-swording I can do a lot of nifty things that no other sword can do.

A spear and knife combo is really really effective, especially with a shield on your back. A winged spear is a really tough foe to beat when 2 handed. You can use the wings to hook a shield and move it out of the way to make a murder and defending against a spear without a shield is VERY difficult. If the enemy closes in on you (which he has to if he doesn't have a spear), you shank them with your knife.

Well for a weapon I can actually use well it would be either tonfa or bo-staff but for a weapon I'd really like then definitely a battle hammer. And none of this 'realism' stuff
I don't want it to look like one that would actually have been used I want it to look like one in a video game.

Basically, any one-and-a-half handed sword would work for me, plus a couple of gauntlets. I wouldn't really care if none of those were adorned with anything special, so long as I could use them.

Fictional - A lightsaber is the obvious choice.
All around - A halberd. A spear, hook, and axe on the end of a pole. What more could you ask for in a weapon?
Zombies - either a katana or a warhammer. I don't know how difficult it is to behead someone with a katana (and I guess it's a good thing if I never find out), but I know for a fact that a warhammer in my hands can cause massive head trauma with little effort.

Kratos' Blades of Chaos. They can be used in both close quarters and at longer distances, they're powerful and they're shiny.

A fish wrapped in newspaper held together with a rubber band.

But in all seriousness, probably something blunt and that doesn't call for much Finesse whilst swinging... maybe a spiky mace =D

I'd go with a spear, I don't get the your screwed if they get in close comment its a spear it has range use it too keep the opponent at distance if you f up you've still got a staff to push them back with, or a spatha a single handed broad sword of the Romans basically a longer gladius. Those two weapons have been used throughout history because their simple and extremely effectiv.

Personal Melee Combat Arsenal:

Long Range - Naginata, using "Hando".

Mid Range - Shovel, using "Hanjutsu".

Close Range - Bladed Gauntlet, using "Hanshido".

I like polearms for capability, gauntlets for versatility, and shovels (the hands down, best all around tool ever) for utility.
