The tech demo is a perfect example of why I don't want a remake to happen. Look at the world of midgar! It looks almost CLEAN. Uncluttered. No sign of the desperate slum living that was evident in the original game. The cool steampunk cars are missing. The sleazy neons blighting the view.

And most importantly of all, it just looks like any big city. Plants can grow in big cities. Easily. Central park, anyone? The old Midgar gave off a sense of decay and it was obvious nothing could grow there between pollution and the reactors.

A remake would lose most of the spirit of the old game, especially considering that most of the environments (which worked at the time, like an interactive matte-painting) would no longer be the same and have to be rendered 3d. just everything would be worse.

NO REMAKE!
Now this I agree with. Just look what tey did to Midgar in Crisis Core. It was so....tidy. Not to mention bland. Where the hell did all the punks go? I remember a lot more mohawk hairdos in the original game.

A remake would ruin the atmosphere I think. Besides, I'm bored of waiting by now. f they were going to make a remake, they should have struck whilst the iron was hot. It's been years now, and I don't care anymore.

Now, if they gave us a good remake of VI, now that'd be a different story. I'd love a 1080p version of that, if only for the opera. I bet Sqeenix could make it beautifully.

I keep hearing talks of 7, 8 and 9, yet Sakaguchi's masterpiece starring the insane clown is forgotten. Where is our FF6 REMAKE (i.e. not a port)? All the previous final fantasy titles got one on the DS and the one that deserves the most recognition only gets ports? Really?
VI was my all time favorite hands down but i almost wouldnt want to see it redone because of the whole favorite book to movie thing. LIke when you read a book you like to picture things your way but when you see the movie you cant not see how they portray characters. I like my VI just the way it is
I agree and disagree somewhat. I would love to see it done correctly, but I would be terrified if, for example, they picked terrible voices for the characters.

I'm pretty sure Squenix said that they weren't making a remake. That why the PS1 style VII was put up for DLC on PSN. Now they're just gonna tease us forever because they know someone will still frost their pants and the sight of it

The phrase 'slow news day' come screaming in my head.

For my two bits, a FF7 remake wouldn't be feasible since:

1) Square are already developing umpteen new games, be they original works or remakes.

2) Fan division/gamer civil war. Unlike every other Final Fantasy game, this one holds some sort of 'best FF evar' trophy. For every fan that ejaculates over the remake actually coming to existence there will more than likely be 5 other gamers (FF fans or otherwise) just screaming at Mr/Mrs/Miss/Ms Spoogey to STFU and to put their genitals away. Hilarity ensues as pretty much the world biggest flame war kicks off.

Not that I'm a militant remake hater. Just that this particular game is a big can of worms.

It has, it's a tech demo released in 2006. Even the Youtube video used in this article is from then. The referenced article on 1up actually puts better context about what's going on.

So, there's no mediocre remake for a mediocre JRPG? Okay then.

And before you supa supa kawaii desu ne ^_^ ^_^ ^_^ Japanophiles break out the outrage, it's just my opinion.
I was wondering when one of you would show up. Yeah..... you don't really have a spot in this thread.
Truer words were never spoken. It's funny to see people who think it's cool to hate JRPGs, most likely because Yahtzee does.

OT: At this stage I just can't say whether or not it will happen. I mean, Tetsuya Nomura already hinted at an announcement where the reception would be "downright huge" and a remake of FFVII would fit that category, but this latest development seems closer to a no than a maybe.

Does anybody really want to see what the current staff at Square-Enix will do to a game they loved?

Unless Final Fantasy XIII and XIV both cure a disease with their storytelling, a remake is the only thing that will keep Square Enix's stocks afloat for this decade.

What's the point of a 7 remake? It looks fine and they would only change the graphics.
I think SE should do 1 and 2 on DS in full 3D as one game, then the same with 3, then 4, 5 and 6 on PSP being remade properly changing to the best graphics the PSP can handle...and GOOD va

Damn you square enix!!! just do the remake already!
I'm ambivalent about the whole thing. Oh, yes, I definately want a remake of Final Fantasy 7! Lets be clear on that. I however want it to be a good remake first and foremost! Games have been remade time and again, but few are the good remakes.

Resident Evil REmake on the gamecube was one such remake. It took everything that made the original game good, and polished that without sacraficing those qualities to newer trends. It still had some ham quality acting (but no Jill sandwiches, or master of unlockings), but it was as true to the term "remake" as ever. It, in fact, improved on the game with new areas, new monsters, and expanding the story to encompass plot points that followed in RE2, RE3, and so on. It was a remake done remarkably well.

If Nomura and his team were to return to FF7, it'd need some thought to make it good. The JRPG scene has gone through some changes, even if core concepts have not. Does Nomura make a "graphical upgraded" FF7? A Kingdom Hearts gameplay inspired FF7, or something more? Is he waiting to utilize FF7, a game that expanded the genre to new heights for (at the time) Squaresoft, something new and equally groundbreaking?

It'd be easy to cobble together some JRPG with those characters and call it a remake. The JRPG genre already does it on a constant basis (well, not calling them remakes of FF7). But to make one worthy of a giant like it is would be quite the task. I'd think it'd be daunting and intimidating, yet exciting at the same time.

I like that Nomura isn't discarding the idea. I like that he is hearing the community of fans, acknowledging us, but isn't jumping the gun. I hope that he's spending this time thinking about the remake, and when the time is right to assemble the team, he'll have something worthy to release to the fans.
Haste does make waste, I to would like to see it done well. I would also drop $100 with out a second thought on it.
I think I would like to see a graphical up date, as well as re-translate some of the dialog (lets be honest, it was pretty bad in some parts). Add some side quests that have flavor instead of filler, perhaps some elements that lead up to dirge of cerberus or advent children (or hell, sense we got blue ray, might have space for a good portion of those story lines as well). Expand the golden saucer a bit, refine the minigames in there, perhaps an online ranking for the golden saucer as well. Expand the relationships a bit, wink wink.

I'm currently replaying FFVII. $16 bucks isn't too much to pay IMO to download it off the PSN. I would prefer them to put VIII up there for download though, that's always been my favourite. I would probably play a remake of VII if they added some new stuff but if all they'd be doing was updating the graphics then maybe I wouldn't bother.

well i would like to have a remake with the same level of love that squeenix gave to final fantasy 13. i dont just want a ressed up version. i want a COMPLETE overhaul! i am talking, complete voice acting, graphics as good as ff13, extra side missions. perhaps an epilogue chapter even? (but just pretend that ff7: advent children didn't exist). i would rather wait 3 years for that than a half arsed port that they finished in 6 months. square can take as long as they want just as long as we get a 'proper' remake.

The problem is that many of them want to do it, but they're all caught up in their current projects. But damn, I want that remake. Final Fantasy VII is the best game in world history for me, and if they upgrade the graphics, get good voice actors and don't change anything else, I say that there will never be a better game made in the future. Ever.

As one of my exes would say, "Your first always has you by the balls". Of course, she was referring to sex and not to video gaming, but it seems that statement applies to Final Fantasy 7 just as well. Not to say that it wasn't a good game, I loved FF7, but it seriously gets far more praise than it really deserves just because it was so many people's first Final Fantasy game.

As for FF8, since people are talking about it, it wasn't a terrible game, but it was really marred by some bad ideas. First and foremost was the junction system. Good idea on paper, but in practice it was just clunky and discouraged casting spells (note: mind the avatar) because if a spell got too low on charges then your stats would decrease. On top of that was a very out-there story, an equipment system that was even more minimal than FF7 (I always liked the old days of having 5+ gear slots) with few upgrades to be had, a clunky/abusable "paycheck" system, an annoying summon system (was I the only one who hated abusing my Square button?), a pointless leveling system since enemies grew with you and you didn't really get anything except more HP for each level, and probably a few other things that I can't think off-hand. It just... experimented with too many things, so when just about every single one of them failed, there wasn't much of a game leftover to be had.

Eh I have a feeling if they did remake FF7 the remake would feel awfully bland compared to the original. They'd probably cut a lot of corners leaving chunks of the original game gone all the while knowing that anything with the FF7 name on it will sell. Not excited but not happy either, if it came out I'd wait for someone else to play it first though.

I hate how squeenix keeps doing this - dangling the 'oooh, FFVII remake - MAYBE!' in front of our faces. It's just more company jargon for "We'll make it when we need a cash cow, but we have bigger things to tend to for the moment, so stay excited and buy it when it comes out!"

Why doesn't Square finally do this already? I'm not even a fan, I actually detest the series, and even I know this would be a great idea.

Me too, although I do think it might lose its nostalgic value somewhat. It was the first Final Fantasy game I played.

Also, the graphics are hands down the best PS1 graphics I've ever seen. The CG graphics, I think, surpass most PS2 games and are on par with many PS3 games.

I'll have to respectfully disagree on that massive stretch. The hi-res might match some PS2 games, but it's not incredibly clean. It's nowhere near the PS3.
