I actually did attend a tournament.
And dropped out 5 min later because, according to them,
"Mr. Game & Watch's matchups are too low, you would lose anyway. So choose another character please."

So yeah, there are tourneys that limit your characters...

I also found that wavedashing junk to look incredibly boring.
"LOLZ! I can move without actually walking!"
"Good for you! You've wrecked your, what, eighth controller now?"
I, er, actually have a shelf dedicated to broken controllers.

i thought it was easier than most beat em ups, particularly as there were no sequences for special moves to remember.

Pokemon Stadium, only pokeballs, highest frequency occurence
this was my favourite thing to do, too. especially on some of the smaller maps, like Final Destination. shame the highest item frequency on Brawl wasn't as high as Melee. the Legendary Pokemon event was the best

Ofc not. Me and my firends always played on Final Destination, and still do to be honest.
That, and Temple. Best two levels ever made.

I don't think 'too hard' is the right way to describe Melee's problem. Difficulty is fine, and it's good to have a high skill ceiling in competitive games. The problem was really the skill curve. When the skills needed for competitive play are as esoteric and unintuitive as wavedashing, it creates a divide between comp and casual players.

In addition, the game is both broad and deep, but the depth only applies to a tiny segment of the breadth. While it can provide a skill challenge, a massive amount of the game has to be cut out to maximise that aspect, which also fosters a sense of division.

Both these problems seem to be unique to Smash Bros, though. Most fighters have a different problem: they only attract a hardcore community to begin with. Street Fighter 4 is openly competitive and doesn't present itself as accessible at all. Lots of fighters are like that, and the genre is pretty stagnant because of it.

Anyway, the only real problem I had with Brawl was that Captain Falcon wasn't very good. A Smash Bros game is only as good as its version of Captain Falcon. Bring back Melee!

Honestly I played the hell out of melee, and I loved it. It was just the right amount of difficult because the easy AI was pathetic, and the very hard was indeed quite hard. I think Brawl should have had the same balance or at least only been a tiny bit easier, Brawl was a bit... boring to go through in single player. The thing I really like about melee is that it could be about skill if you wanted it to. with brawl it's less about skill, the controls are simpler and I think it doesn't really encourage you to get any better at the game.

So I'll always like melee more, but I suppose brawl is pretty fun.

Dormmates and I, sitting around a Gamecube for about a year, 3-stock FFA. Real men pick random characters, y'know. Only by playing as Pichu against three Marths can you reach Nirvana.

You still lose, of course, because MARF. But playing in an environment where a Captain Falcon who leaps off of Final Destination to knee a falling Luigi, and dies in the process, is considered the real winner is the best thing on earth. Brawl just never managed to approach those peaks.

Still played no items though, because after a while it became clear that anyone who picked up a fan or a sword was going to win.

I get what Sakurai is after. He wants to create a party game, where crazy shit happens and everyone laughs. That's why Brawl's stages are so much more ornery than Melee's; so random deaths can occur. And it does happen, Falco trips and eats a GANON HELL SLAUGHTER FIST, and there's laughter, but there's also RAAAGE, and one guy raging can really bring things down for the whole room. I don't have an alternative to propose, except to suggest that some people have cool friends and others have friends who try hard, and that no amount of game design is going to fix them.
Well shit son, you speak the truth. But Pichu? I just didn't know what they were trying to achieve with that character. Hilarious to play though? Yes.

Strange considering everyone I know, "hardcore" or "casual", preferred Melee to Brawl.
I think they goofed up nerfing some of the established characters (especially Samus). Brawl also felt kind of sluggish to me, like everyone was underwater. It was very jarring for my sense of timing.

I really don't know what kind of tournament bans most characters, unless said character is actually overpowered. There is a reason why most ban other stages besides Final Destination and Items though, they introduce a factor of luck into the equation, in which if some item were to spawn, the loser can quickly turn the game into his favour. Some stages can also provide some sort of random factor that has the same effect. It's supposed to be the player that is more skilled will come out on top, not because he was lucky.

I also don't see the problem with Smash Bros being competitive, you can have a game that is fun and accessible but still have a competitive nature behind it.

Ok correct me if I'm wrong but did'nt Brawl have a faster pace then Melee? Or have years of playing as the same character just made me notice the fine tuning in regards to character balencing. Kirby seemed a lot faster in Brawl from what I remember even if his dash attack did get nerfed a bit.
I was more annoyed at Mr Game & Watch getting nerfed severely but yeah I agree with you, I think it might be abit of both, characters moving quicker but also due to the fact we've been playing for years we seem to pick up on this sort of thing.
It would be awesome to see another entry in the Smash Bros. series but I guess we'll just have to wait and see
Aye Mr Game and Watch was certainly a Brawl victim, I was not to upset to see the back of Roy though in the move from Melee to Brawl. As for a new Smash Bros. it would mostly likely be on the next Nintendo console whatever that may be.

Really? Huh. I played it a few times a while ago at a friends house and I remember being really good at it. Maybe I'm just good at fighting games, because whenever I play anyone in Soulcalibur, Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat, I win.I always played as Samus or Captain Falcon (i.e. the spawn of Jack Bauer and Chuck Norris looking at each other), so maybe that had something to do with it. Either way, I liked melee better than Brawl.

Masahiro Sakurai? Oh yeah! I remember that dumb ass. The one who said if they give us what we want then they're actually not, or something retarded like that.

Anyway, Melee is still one of my heavy favourites, just recently I reset the game so I can go through all challenges again because they were actually challenging and fun. The reason it was so great you clueless ***** is because it was complex and full of depth, there was so much more to the game if that isn't clear. I spent ages trying to get at least some skill to pass adventure mode on very hard, I did eventually and don't regret a second of it. In the end I just became very quick from all the playing I did over the years and it was enough to accomplish everything. I love to play a game like Melee again.

However, Brawl was the opposite, all flash and no substance (and a shit load of flaws), a game that can only be made by developers that have no idea.

Melle was at times stupidly hard like how you had to have a 24 hour match to get mewtwo. What was up with that.

In other words, the game was never intended to be played with all items turned off on one of the boring flat maps like Final Destination. You know who you are, tournament players. You know who you are.

AAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand /thread

Seriously, I'm not paying 45? for 25% of the game's content, I want to appreciate every bit of the insane, loveable and random Nintendo character on character combat.

It didn't really seem that hard... One of my friends can whoop me good at it, but he's really good at games, especially Nintendo games.

I wouldn't mind more accessability, but I though the feel of Melee was the best: Fast, Hectic, Fun, and very smooth, unlike it's clunky younger brother Brawl.

On topic: I am not a fan of fighting games. Melee was the first fighter that I actually enjoyed. I never felt that it was too hardcore or inaccessible.

Off topic: A friend of mine is one of the No Items, Stock Only, Temple Only, 1 v 1, people. It's incredibly boring. I don't understand why people like it that way. The only levels I don't like are the F0 levels and those are fine so long as they aren't played 400 billion times in a row.

PS: Brawl has too much unavoidable randomness and imbalance. I'll stick with Melee.

Haw. If you can pick up the game and instantly have the reaction time of a god and a firm grasp of the game's physics, then sure. But I'm positive this isn't the case. In this game if you're a low level player facing a pro, the difference in skill is obvious.

Then again you just asked where KI3 is, so I guess I just got trolled.
Well I guess I am a "god" then; but no you didn't get trolled, I just miss the KI combo system, and really liked its balance (minus KI1 and cinder)

Sorry I just happen to have random thoughts, plus I was moody hadn't eaten all day, and then some, and it was taking a toll

in short, I don't like smash bros; and it's not very "good" (but no I'm not one of those obsessives that wants the NEXT "Street Fighter 2" ...but I do want MvC3)
