I've changed my work schedule for video games twice- I wanted to swap an opening shift with a closing shift so I could go to the midnight release of final fantasy 12. You know what I told my co-worker? "Would you trade shifts with me tomorrow so I can pick up a videogame at midnight?" My co-worker gamed too, so she was cool with it. My boss didn't care if we didn't care.

The second time was when our local Gamecrazy begain its closing sale. I had a different boss for this one, who also was into gaming. My schedule had been changed to move my start time up, and I called to ask if I could come in at my original time, since I wouldn't be able to go to the sale otherwise. Not only did he say OK, he gave me a shopping list.

I love my co-workers. :)

High school is okay, but concerning about the future of education but that's a different dilemma. But seriously, I can go late and tough it up for the next day because then I can actually talk with friends about it. I would rather be in a room talking with friends about Portal 2 then start a second run though.

Wow, I've never heard of it going this far...that's actually kind of cool (albeit unnecessary). People book time off work or do shady 'sick days' in the name of video games, movies or sports from time to time..but never enough people to shut down operations or a class.

My ethical nature prevents me from doing any of the above because I'll just feel guilty and crappy the whole day, but to each their own.

Ok ive got to ask.

Who the hell "Calls in" for class? Seriously I am dumbfounded by this. Not show up, sure, but actively calling in advance to say hey I wont be there. Who does that. And given that the prof had foreknowledge that it was going to happen somewhat indicates that someone indeed did. A job I can understand, but school? Really?

And what was the point of skipping a class just based on a game that would possibly take less time than the actual class itself? Couldnt you just skip lunch? Are you really going to be playing it all day?

I did the slightly more painful choice and stayed up all night to finish playing. It is sleep well missed.

Firstly, the actual source is his Twitter account, [http://twitpic.com/4mp25j] not G4TV. Secondly, what the fuck is wrong with you people? Half of you are throwing a hissy fit because this lecturer has a good enough rapport with his students to do this.

One of my happy thoughts of my high-school years was of major game launches, which were rare enough to be celebrated in class, usually with kids taking turns at the gaming stations with the option of studying, kibbitzing or whatever between turns. It was glorious.

If I were a prof, I'd have a similar strategy, if not encourage a Portal launch party, especially if I could mooch pizza and play-time from it.

On on unrelated note (with the exception that it's another Valve title), I finally achieved Still Something To Prove last night in Left 4 Dead 2, using the Last Man On Earth mutation to pull it off. I died sixty times during Hard Rain, at least fifty of which were during the finale, which goes to show, anyone can Be The Guy if they're willing to suffer long enough for it.

This isn't fair to the students who actually care about their education, if a load of people decide not to turn up for the class then fuck them, let them fail. The class should happen for the students dedicated enough to actually turn up...

I don't call in sick a lot, because I hardly ever get sick. However, when I do, it really sucks. I wouldn't skip school because of a game release, the anticipation would make getting it after school all the more enjoyable.

That's kind of worrying that people are throwing their education away for a game.
It's just one day. I would hardly call that "Throwing their education away".

OT: I've never done this myself. I eventually will though.

It's been bugging me for years. :p
C = The speed of light. If anything the theory of relativity led to the hypothesis that the cake as well as all cake pretty much, while perhaps not a lie in experience, is a whole lot less physical than most of us think. Particularly as it approaches 186,000 miles per second.

As for this teacher, I've got to go with the idea that they themselves are playing portal 2 today. Like most of us. Happily I am off now and didn't have to ditch anything important just so that Glados could play with me. Waitasec.... So we pre-planned our own abuse????
Ah well going to work isn't that different I suppose....

I remember when Starcraft II was being released... I was a TA for a course that had a final coming up. I didn't cancel any of my tutorials or office hours, but I did tell them "I probably won't get to e-mail questions very quickly because I will be playing Starcraft II a lot"... followed by a "good luck on your final".

I think if I were teaching it I would make Portal and Portal 2 a part of the curriculum. Not just because it teaches wonder as well as Science and critical thinking but because I could use "Speedy thing goes in, Speedy thing comes out." as a test answer! YES!!

Anyone else bothered by the grammatical error in the first line? I hope this wasn't an English class.
Hehe, reminds me of my english teacher. I am literally better than her at english (english aint our primary language). Like several times it's like "You has" or "He have". And i'm too much of a coward to point it out for the 57th time.

I'm making a note here: School cancelled
It's hard to describe my anticipation

Public schools:
We stay home from work because we play
for the good of none of us
except for those who stay home

But there's no sense going to school every day
you just keep on faking till you run out of game
and the faking gets done and you stay where you belong
home where you can game

in case you really want to know. C is the speed of light. 300,000,000 m/s
Beg pardon? What source gives you this figure? Mine reads 186,000 miles per second?? (Source: Gary Zukav, the Dancing Wu Li Masters) Then again I'm from the States and Oooooooh. See this is why the Mars lander buried instead of well, landing. It's like Dr. Banzai teaches us "No matter where you go, there you are." Uuuunless you didn't use metrics like most of your team in which case you are probably somewhere quite different.

Did you mean Kilometers (Km) per second? That velocity is listed (Source: About Time, Paul Davies) as 300,000 Km per second.

There all fixed. God it would be good if we all just used metrics....y'know for Science! ^^

No, it wouldn't. It would be fitting.
It would be ironic if it wasn't a class, but actually a weekly meeting of the "Anti-games Association".

EDIT: OT: Ha, lol. I've never skipped school for a game, but I know people who have (I have skipped school to work on assignments but that's only if I feel I can be more productive at home than at school on that particular day.
