I have been a vegetarian for a few years now. I went cold turkey and never looked back.
My body really doesn't seem to think of meat as food anymore, as in a guy eating a burger next to me won't make me hungry.

I can't really remember what meat tastes like anymore.

The only thing that I ever want is fish. I was a huge fish eater before I gave up on meat and I still want it from time to time.

Good luck to you.

Try and find some good veggie recepies, there are a lot of them around.

Oh, and never try to find an alternative to meat (e.g. fake meat). They pretty much always suck and make you miss the real thing.
I'd suggest this. And as for the second part, it seems pretty true for every veggie I've met. It depends I guess, whether you're a veggie from birth or it's a decision you've made based on X thought or event. If you've tasted real meat before, nothing will EVER replace that taste or satisfaction, but Quorn desperately tries hard to mimic it and Quorn bacon isn't that bad.

Also Tofu is a great meat replacer because its made for just that, a meat replacement.
ummm no it's not meant as a meat replacement and never was meant as such[/quote]

I know it wasn't at first, but that's what its mainly used for now.

The video didn't disgust me enough, as I have had pretty bad ingrown toenails and cystic acne.

Unless that's an offer to pluck and roast you, too much information.

Good for you. I recommend Indian food. It's delicious and very veg friendly. You won't even miss the meat. If you are absolutely craving meat (this doesn't ever really happen to me) I imagine good way to bust the cravings is with Burger King veggie burgers. I threw out the first one I tried because I thought they had swapped it with a meat burger (they taste very similar). Also, if you live in Surrey Canada, not UK then I highly recommend President's Choice Best Ever Meatless Chicken Strips. Good luck!

just make sure to keep your iron and protein up

also, quorn and linda mccartney do really good meat replacements.
taste is similar, but a little more bland.

you dont need to take supplements as long as you eat things like beans, spinach, things that have lots of iron, protein and vitamin B.
you'll also probly find yourself hungrier without meat, so i'd suggest high fiber foods, porridge, apples, brown breads et c.

i stopped eating meat six years ago [i think, might have been five] and i've only wanted it once or twice since
keep in mind that you're not doing it to save-the-animals
you can always have a burger if you're craving it.
people seem to think that vegetarianism is some sort of sect with cemented rules. dont worry about cravings. if you crave meat, you can either fight it, or go with it, decide when you get there.

It's like one of my really close friends, he saw something involving animals which was...bad. Now whenever he tries to eat meat he just throws up. Personally, i saw a video involving bad things happening to chicks and it really doesn't affect me.

I love surgery videos, and that didn't disgust me...

But on topic:

A lot of new Vegetarians who actually liked meat all along tend to find that tofu is not the satisfactory all-purpose meat replacement the had hoped for. It doesn't taste like meat, it doesn't have the texture of meat, etc. While excellent in most soups and Asiatic cooking, it doesn't really make for good ground beef or sausage. But here are some replacements I find useful:

Mushrooms and artichokes both offer a slightly meaty flavor and cook to a nice, firm texture. They also have the missing protein and absorb flavors fairly well.

Another good meat replacement can be eggplant, which cooks to have a a good "meat" or umami flavor when does right, (I actually like it better than meat in curries, casseroles, and most middle eastern foods.)

As for protein replacements, most people can't go wrong with beans, which are very palatable and can be adapted for a number of different kinds of recipes, especially with so many varieties of beans to choose from.

Onions and garlic cook together to have a high umami flavor content, and can give a boost to the "meaty" flavor of your cooking.

There are also some phenomenally good veggie patties in the market, that grill nicely when covered in olive oil and don't get horrendously dry and cracker-y. The Safeway brand is actually one of my favorites, though the Portabello mushroom burger by Boca is also a favorite.

If you don't miss the flavor of meat,then this was completely useless and you can stick to tofu. ^_^;

Hello fellow Escapees; Up until now I have been a meat-eater; I've drifted along eating like everyone else and not giving a second thought.

A while back I saw ......something...that made me feel a little disgusted and now I feel ill whenever I even think about eating meat.

I'm not one of those pretentious hippies who go on and on about how 'animals are people too' as I understand that animals need meat to function (Are lions ignorant and fat?)

But this has really got to me and I feel really disgusted; So to all the Vegetarian escapists -

what would be a good way to change my diet without getting major cravings or feeling ill; I understand it wont be easy - but what did you do, how did you change your diet, what foods did you eat to help change from a Meat-eater to a vegetarian?

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: This is the Video - if it is somehow against the rules - I apologize sincerely.

I've seen a lot worse, go take a tour of a slaughter house if you want to see some real horrors. But do you know what? Meat is just too damn good. Not even that would put me off the stuff. Right now I want some Gammon. ohhhhh YUM.

Stir-fry steam veggies one night, bean and cheese burritos another night, Ceasar salad the next night, etc.
He can't eat Ceasar, it's made with raw eggs and anchovies.

I think I'm the only vegetarian Escapist, though I could be wrong.
yes you are wrong, never seen the heated(to put in mildily) agruments on the subject?

Also why do so many people love to eat?I only do it because if I don't I would most likely die and given the choice to have to never eat again I would quite glady say yes.
