Honestly, I'm surprised how many people seem to think that images in the same number of dimensions that we normally see are somehow a gimmick. It seems inevitable that they'll take over some day.

However, that day isn't today, and it won't be by 2013 either. That's just flat out stupid.
3d will never completely take over. ever. sure it will exist but only as a spectacle. the moment 3d is common place it loses its edge because its "rarity" made it special. in other words, 3d is the real life ghastly gibus (hat from tf2). it used to be loved in small doses, but the moment it went big everyone hated it.
Umm... reality is 3D. Sure, anything that requires goofy glasses is automatically a gimmick, and anything that's likely to cost three or four thousand dollars by the time you get the TV and glasses is certainly not going to catch on with most people, but someday there will be affordable 3D that doesn't require glasses, and when that happens there will be no point to restricting anything to 2D.

It will happen, it's just unlikely to happen this decade, let alone by 2013.

"It'll start slowly this year. But like HDTV I wouldn't rule out the fact that this will be installed in everyone's living room in three year's time, and for us to be in a position to have content that could really look absolutely amazing in 3D."

My family doesn't even have a HDTV yet ._.
Same here, and I don't plan on getting one for another 5 or so years when my current TV finally dies. Even then I'll only get one because you won't be able to get an SD TV anymore. You can't really find them now.

And lets not forget how alot of people just got into HD TVs. I just can't see it taking off until the cable companies start offering 3D networks.
They're launching an ESPN 3D soon.

To be fair, HDTV wasn't really a rvolution, it was jsut nicking 10 year old monitor tech.

Why anyone would think ubisoft of all people would have a fucking clue about it i don't know

Ah, Ubisoft, still crazy and delusional I see. Much like their DRM worked flawlessly for everyone and stopped pirates in their tracks I'm sure. ;)

3D TV is a useless gimmick revived only to sell more overpriced electronics. Heck HD has barely taken off as it is, so why would anyone want to invest several thousand euros to another new TV?

You know, I have to disagree with you on that one. I saw Avatar in 3D, and then I saw The Last Airbender in 2D. The Last Airbender was honestly much more attractive (not that the story was any better, but at least The Last Airbender was trying). 3D is the opposite of immersive; you could be really enjoying a movie and all of a sudden a branch comes out of the screen all see-through and wobbly and you realize, Oh, right, I'm in a theater, and this is a movie and it's kind of shit, and you've lost all connection with the movie. I don't want to be in movies; there's no place for me there. If I wanted to see out of someone's face, I'd play a video game. Meanwhile, I can watch movies that draw you in not by throwing arms and leaves at your face, but by being good. You can say 3D's not a gimmick all you want, but you'll have convince me that MegaPirana or any of the other 3D titles slated to come out are anything more than a gimmick and I will concede the point.

I wish they'd remake The Ring in 3d for cinemas.

The number of heart attacks it will cause will hopefully shut up this damn 3d industry for the next 10 years or so.

EDIT: Do you know why watching tv is fun? Because I know its 'in' the tv, and its gonna stay there, not jump out at me.

Umm... so the very concept of seeing in three dimensions is gimmicky because the current crop of 3D movies are gimmicky? Sorry, but I can't prove nonsense wrong.

Well those thoughts may work for them ... if they are prepared to wait an additional 10 years beyond their predictions for reality to catch up.

Considering there are still people without always-on broadband internet......yeah, "Everyone" is not going to have a Optical-Illusion TV.

IT'S NOT REAL 3D!

God I hope not, I'm not a fan of 3D. Then againg, we all saw the extent of Ubisoft's mad technical clairvoyance with all of the DRM problems.

Certainly not us, we buy cheap TVs and rarely use them, so they last about three decades. We just upgraded, so...

Honestly, everyone will eventually have a 3D TV, and the underlying reason is encapsulated in the post below:

Seeing as many people still don't own HDTVs, I call this retarded.
Many people still don't have HDTVs. How big of a stretch is it for them to buy a 3D TV when it's time to get a new set? 3D is expensive now, but so was HD when it was at the level of market penetration that 3D is currently. A 3D tv is nothing but an HD TV with an extra video mode; in other words, once the economy of scale kicks in to the point that the price difference is negligible, there will be no reason not to buy 3D, whether people buy the glasses or not. That level of market penetration may sound ludicrous, but HDTVs themselves were neither wanted or needed when they came out, and they're doing just fine now. I say by 2013 they'll be about as common as HD sets were in 2007 or 2008; I'd give it five or six before they're ubiquitous.

As for the people saying it's a terrible gimmick, I have three words: Toy Story 3. Go watch it in 3D, I'll wait.

Now, what did you see? I'll tell you; a completely non-gimmicky, immersive experience -- with nothing popping out of the screen and a rock a solid image, just an excellent depth of field. It's like surround sound -- when it was new, it only appeared on blockbuster popcorn films, and critics hated it. Once it started showing up on serious dramas, pulling people into the action without making them think "ooh, that ship just flew over my head," suddenly it was an important part of the language of film. Basically, give it time; the directors still have to figure out what works and what doesn't.

What a bunch of pillocks.

We haven't got past B/W or broadcast TV yet. And there's a lot of us that don't want 3D TV.

"Everyone?"

I've heard a quarter of people get headaches with 3D.
That's not to count those of us that can't actually see 3D.

3D TV is dead until they can remove the glasses and the headaches and the requirement to view it at the correct angle.

Remember when E3 season was about cool shit and the video game industry as a whole moving forward? Now its little more than a contest to see who can shove their head further up their ass.
