I don't really understand all the brouhaha.

Since when do people who watch Faux News read books (even dumb ones), anyway?
Books not written by Beck or O'Liely, anyway.

Awesome. I'm sure this way the world will think gamers, in general, are level-headed people. Right?
Sorry, I don't agree that we should, again, take it stoically to the nose self assured of our own superiority. That's why democrats lose so many elections. It's a sick sad world. Get dirty.
There are better ways than being childish about it.

You know us video players, you just can't get enough rape in during the day. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say it's not videos games that cause rape but rapist that cause rape.

You're talking about being childish to people who being debased and childish is all they know. Facts and high minded thinking mean NOTHING AT ALL TO THESE PEOPLE!

So we should throw out our own facts and thinking and let the whole thing degrade to child-like antics?

This was the same thing that happened to the woman who attacked Mass Effect and got called out for never having even seen the game, just said it's totally showing women as objects...without realizing you could be a woman.

Again. This is why Democrats lose elections. Republicans have no problem at all saying the stupidest crap imaginable to get people afraid and voting for them because people are idiots and that's what they respond to. Take John Kerry for example. A Republican talking head decided to pull a last minute kick to the balls by accusing Kerry of never going to Vietnam. It was low, it was completely without basis (the man had earned medals over there) and Kerry decided it was beneath him to respond to this BS.

Well, people being the mindless sheep they are, bought the story hook line and sinker and with Kerry not coming out guns blazing against it, we got another 4 years of Bush.

So yes, we have to learn to quietly put our pride away and get down in the mud some times. Certainly a lot more than what we do.

Remember kids, psychology is more than saying "I'm a psychologist," then saying your opinion is fact because you're a psychologist.

In other news Karma is a *****
Shes a psychiatrist (med doctor first) not a psychologist. Shes trained in a totally different way.

That being said, your statement still holds true.
And that exactly is that difference?

My understanding is Psychologists is broader researched based and deals more with people who are mentally healthy and functional, such as why do people buy red fruit instead of green fruit or whatever.

Psychiatrists are more for people who - how would Dr Silberman put it - just plain nuts and need to be institutionalised. Or at least I think that's how it works.

But who would be more qualified to comment on how certain mass media affects rate of certain types of violent crime? Seems more epidemiological, more for Psychologist.

Good, people should be put in there place for giving an uneducated opinion on a subject they have no merit too. I also believe this is a lot more civil of us gamers to do by bomb reviewing her book then sending like death threats which people have done to video game publishers.

That's true. But when you go on television and claim that videogames cause rape, after publishing a book on how to manipulate men with sex, then you better be prepared for some sort of backlash.

The reviews on Amazon range from legitimate reviews to nonsense, although Amazon has started cleaning them up (it was at 53 reviews about five minutes ago, now it is at 50). Like I said, most of the one-star reviews are well-put and actually serve as reviews for the book.

I'm not Canadian, but I suppose we Norwegians also have to contribute to the cause, so consider it done.

She fell victim for one of the classic blunders! The most famous is never get involved in a flame war with 4Chan, but only slightly less well know is this: never go in against video gamers when rape is on the line!

While the response is indeed a little childish...I would totally go on Amazon and do the exact same thing.

It doesn't help our cause any, but it sure does feel good.

Bravo, you cause me to nearly choke to death. Eating plus doubling over in laughter is not a good mix.

Yes well, reading that she's an "Emmy award winning media-psychiatrist" adding to the fact that she wrote this book with the obvious intention of getting it to sell with a catchy, provocative title suggests to me that her judgment can't be considered as fact. She's turned the whole thing into some pop-science, advising people on being manipulative bastards, as if there aren't enough of those around already.

When I finish uni I want to study deception, maybe write a couple books on the subject. That doesn't mean as soon as I have some semi-credible theories and half-baked studies I'm going to teach politicians, CEOs and everyone's mum and their dog how to lie straight to someone's face and not get caught. Sure it might pay well, but I also know once someone goes down that road their credibility is compromised. Who's to say they wouldn't commit fraud just to make sure their theories fit so they can keep making money?
If you must study these "bad girls", have some integrity; Teach people how to avoid getting sucked into one of their tricks. Also conduct some good research. A few of these reviews claim that her theories are based on no actual research. Now I don't know if these reviews are trustworthy, but I also know -combining all the things that raised red flags for me about her- she can't be trusted either.

The reviews are a fun read though.

You know what? No it won't, but the point is moot - nothing we do will make people like these change their minds about us. So we might as well bomb her crappy book; better than rolling over, taking her ****, and asking for more.

Besides, the kind of people who will sheepishly believe everything she says are either (a) already diehard Fox fans who wouldn't have been swayed anyway or (b) the same kind of sheep that will believe an amazon book review. We can't do anything about (a) and we hurt her book sales among (b). I'll take a partial win over a total loss any day.
