Duke Nukem 3D, when I was around 4. It was less of my parents buying an M game for me, and more of my dad buying an M game for himself back but I stole it after he installed it (back in the days when you could install a game on more than one computer).
The first M-game I had played that I remember was the original resident evil for PS1... Besides my sick obseesion for killing zombies I no way had my "precious" childhood ruined.
When I was like 10-11 my mom brought home a copy of Doom 2 from her office at work. She had played and beaten it so she knew the violence in it but still thought I would like it. That said she still had control over it cause while I was free to play it she was the only one who knew how to load it from the DOS.
Mortal Kombat at 3, DOOM and Metal Gear solid at 5. My parents didn't care and I had an older brother (four years older so he had it at 7 and 9 at least). It's ruined my life, now I have to watch CSI, Law and Order, forensic files, and Dexter just so I can keep up with the latest in how not to get arrested for the many murders you do because you played violent video games.
Ratings never had any bearing in my country. 12 year old kids can buy porn if they want too. And they usually do. I bought anything I wanted. And I turned out just fine. I didn't murder anybody, and I didn't rape anybody. And I'm a pretty calm person. Proving once more that violent behavior doesn't come from violent video games.
apparently I was "super intelligent" when I was little, so my dad figured I could tell between people and flying brown heads with arms and horns that spit out flying flaming skulls
and I didn't turned into a psychotic terminator, like, at all
I remember playing Doom when I was young, probably around 8 or so with my dad watching, helping me with the controls. Duke Nukem 3d followed shortly after, and I managed to turn the kiddy filter off all on my own. I think it's probably worth noting that these games wouldn't get an M or 18+ rating these days though (although that is definitely up for debate), so the first which probably counts would be GTA 3 at 13 or so.
