I'll admit that the iTouch/iPhone is a nice piece of hardware. It plays music and it does it very well. It's got a nice screen for video playback and the storage is decent. When I got my new phone, though I went for a Blackberry because Blackberries are good phones. It's a bit ridiculous that the iPhone does everything great except e-mail and you know... being a phone.
Nothing wrong with the email app. Works great for me.

The only handheld device that trumps the PSP and the DS is the Pandora system... http://openpandora.org/

although the thing seems more like a super netbook than a handheld.

Firstly, the DS can't really do anything but play games. OK, sure DSi can now connect to the web or whatever, but I think-- sorry, I KNOW iPhone is much better at surfing the web than a DS is.
You know what else is good for surfing the web? A PC. How often do you need to look at the internet on the go?
I think the better question is "why would you buy a gaming handheld for something other than games?" This has always confused me, in that yes I understand people would love to have their MP3 players and their phones and their gaming machines all in one bundle but so far, in terms of the handheld gaming market itself, the Game Boy and (to a lesser extent) the DS dominated the market based purely on games, not extra bullshit like TV Tuners (Sega Game Gear) or being a phone (N-Gage).
I like to read comic books on my DS. And my friend likes reading them on his PSP. But we both still think that DS, with the touch screen and dual screens gives a better "feel". Almost like a real comic book.
Yeah but I don't think either of you had that specific function in mind, over games, when you purchased them. Course I could be wrong.

Who cares about touchscreens? That shit's redundant on the DS, now you're putting even more redundant features on your own product?

Classy!

I don't think you can get more plain, generic and gimmicky than an Apple product, really.

Apple is a giant pig-headed company that hates its users as much as it hates its competetion that needs to go die... alone. I hate the company and do not own or support any product from them.

That said, Zune HD is gonna kick the iTouch's ass and even the Zune HD does not stand on level footing as the PSP or DSi on the gaming side of life. (I am not fond of PSP or the DSi as well, a bit too casual for my taste)

Edit: For those who may not know, the Zune HD has the new Tegra processor in it along with HD radio, OLED, games & apps, social, zune pass, and a slew of other things that I am not going to bother mentioning...
Hmm i smell a bit of M$ Fanboyism here; and you can say the Zune beats the iPod touch when it takes over its immense market share.(Which of course it never will)

Apple stuff is more expensive cos its better; making the jump from PC to Mac may have cost me a shitload of money, but frankly it's worth every penny to be free of all that M$ bullshit
Can uh, can your Mac run Crysis? What's that? NO? Really? Then please silence your mouth. I had an ipod, it was terrible, I now have a zune, it was great. My family had a macbook, and every single one of us hated the damn thing. More money=/=better. Although I must applaud Steve Jobs for being able to sell an inferior product for 4 times what it is worth.
Yeah if i had bootcamp on my mac, i could run Crysis easily. The zune? Its another example of M$ being late to the party with a product that is a sad, cheap ripoff of their rivals. You must have a family of M$ fanboys by the sound of it; my family hate their windows systems, while i get on with my mac fine. If you wanna get started on inferiour products, remember that M$ have not made a good OS since 2001.
I agree that More money=/=better, but in certain cases, eg with a mac, it is
Silly mac users it's all about Linux, I think Open Pandora will beat the iphone in gaming since idk it's a open gaming platform =D. And I'm sry but I'm a tech person and mac's are not better then MS or Linux. I've used macs and they seem lacking, but yeah if you had bootcamp more you have to get to match a windows PC. If apple's stuff was "better" why do you need bootcamp? And saying "I run windows on a Mac, but Mac is still better" is crap(not saying you said that, I'm just gonna say this now), if windows sucks why do you need windows?

I'm going to be the minority and side with Apple here. Though the iPhone can't quite compete with the PSP or DS in games yet, there's a lot about it that makes it better.
Firstly, the DS can't really do anything but play games. OK, sure DSi can now connect to the web or whatever, but I think-- sorry, I KNOW iPhone is much better at surfing the web than a DS is. PSP has a fair few entertainment features, but again, how well do these features actually work? The internet on a PSP is slow. The music volume is just bad. I'd always rather have an iPod than listen to music of a PSP or DS. As for gaming, let's just be honest, iPhone's never going to beat PSP or DS. Why? Let's see.
"Apple outlined four things that make the PSP and DS worse for gaming: "No Multi-Touch user interface. Games are expensive. No App Store. No iPod."
But that's the thing, iPhone ONLY has a touch screen. Without additional controls you just can't keep gamers interested for long, let alone make a game immersive enough.
However that being said, PSP's and DS's games aren't that strong anymore.
Now that Nintendo are making "games for your mum" there's no point in even looking at what they have to offer on DS. As for the PSP, I've never found anything on there interesting. I think I'll stick to PS3/360.
Yeah but the DS and PSP where game system's first extra's like music and web surfing later. Unlike Iphone with music and web surfing now, music later.

Oh Apple, when will you learn to actually make good products? You're not even a threat to the PSP, much less the DS.

Alright, alright, perhaps I should have clarified that statement a bit before posting. What I meant by teenage girls were ones who are totally immersed in popular culture, and thus more likely to buy Apple's shit because it looks good with their purse.

Teenage girls who have an IQ of over 80 and can think for themselves, keep up the good work. All four of you...
I really should introduce you to most of my peers. It might work to dampen some of that stereotyping urge. Been a teen doesn't make one stupid. Being a teenage girl doesn't either.

Apple isn't exactly liked by me. You can go see any hateful post in this thread to get what i'm thinking. They're not even funny, they're just stuck up their own arses.

In my honest opinion i don't think apple have anything special and unique. Take my nokia 5800 that plays music equally as well as the ipod and the music isn't locked down to my nokia either. It also has touch screen and a fair few nifty games. They seem to have a monopoly on the music buisness i don't really care about applications i brought my creative zen for music and it plays it well and it has the same capacity as a ipod nano. The new ipod touch can still only hold a small amount of my boyfriends music collection.
Then we go onto gaming. What makes them special in a gaming aspect. Cheap games. Errr people can get fairly cheap good games on the psp and DSi. Personally i don't like touch screen gaming when i had my DS. Which nicely brings me onto my second point. Touch screen its not new honest, alot of people do touch screen now. Apple arn't the only ones anymore. I've had a play on a friends iphone and it was the same as my nokia.
Apple arn't different they're playing in a catching up market. They may have got a monopoly over music but the gaming world is going to be harder to conquer. I think the only way of the getting anywhere in the gaming industry is through the path of the nintendo wii and for people who just like mimicky gadgets. When you think of a handheld gaming platform we think of sony or nintendo, apple doesn't really come to mind. When i think of apple i think of mobile phone games which arn't brilliant. Graphics arn't really everything. Lemmings has naf graphics i still love the game. Crysis has good graphics it bored the jebebus out of me.

...yup. Saw it coming. First Microsoft makes a console, then Macintosh makes a handheld. Still waiting on Linux to make a Penguin-ized gaming system, that goes fishing with you in lieu of you having friends, or something. And number of games means nothing to success of system--The dreamcast had a pretty decent library, but it stank out loud for Billy's sake. The DS and the PSP do have a quality threshold, though admittedly the bar is set pretty low at times. And while the ipod might be a good like casual porting whore of a handheld--it's still not talked about when people discuss gaming. And that's the long and short of it, right there. Sure, there's a few fans out there who like those little puzzle games or how you can scribble on your screen with your finger and call it a game, but the ipod just doesn't offer anything fulfilling back to the gaming community to actually present itself as anything more than the company scrotum-fondler of the portable world.

Awwwwww! Thats adorable! Apple thinks it's a competitor in the gaming market!

In all seriousness I have no idea what is wrong with that company if they honestly believe all the stuff that is coming out of their mouths. You have your own niche Apple, don't try to pretend you are important outside of it.

To be honest I'm not even sure why Apple is a major player in anything, even in terms of mp3 players there are better (and cheaper) alternatives (see Creative or hell, even Sony players). The only advantage the iPod has is memory size (which tbh I don't need). Maybe people just like shiny stuff...

I'm being mostly sarcastic, a little bit of a jerk, and also slightly nice. No Twat though.

Pointing out that you are a girl gamer and thusly making the suggestion that teenage girls are gamers (IE its a common thing) is kind of silly. Is it true? Maybe. But a single person is never an accurate model.

Some people smoke all their lives and live longer than people who don't. Do most people? Not at all. Most die earlier. But people tend to grab that one or two unique cases and act like that's the reality.

I've met teenage girls who were gamers, however for the most part they played DDR (which was fine because so was I). I don't however see a large market of girls playing real games in their teen years. If they did I imagine we'd see far less of those hannah montanna PSP packs and more quality games being targeted towards girls instead.

But again, I was more mocking you for using the "If I am A then everyone must be A" mentality ;).
Oh no, I wasn't making myself out to be "If I'm one then everyone else is one"

I don't think DDR classes people as being gamers :/ And I play real games!

They're doing Hannah Montanna stuff because thats what most girls are interested in = large market.

They stick a few Hannah Montanna stuff to a handheld = large market buying hand helds.

Common sense ;D

If I had read this a few months ago, I would have been thinking bad things about Apple. But after playing several games on my brothers iPhone, I must admit, it is pretty good. But in my opinion, the gaming is just an extra of the iPhone. Whereas the PSP and DS were designed primarily for gaming.
Therefore, for that reason, I will never acknolowdge it as competition for the PSP or DS, unless of course, Apple design a console specifically for gaming.

Well the only reason i'd get bootcamp is if i wanted to play PC games. I just prefer OSX over xp or vista, and i Preffer apple's hardware over most windows pc makers; i'd prefer my Macbook pro, with it's one-piece aluminium body, than some crappy acer or dell laptop that is just plastic pieces mashed together.
